Bird Watching & Matthew 6:26 – YAH Feeds the Birds

Happy February from Lange Girl Farms! As winter lingers in Southeast Michigan, bird watching has become one of our favorite homeschool activities. Bundling up to spot chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the wild turkey flocks that wander our land is pure joy—and a perfect tie-in to Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” We’re seeing YAH’s provision in every feeder visit. Come see how bird watching is sparking wonder, science, and faith this week!

Our Winter Bird Watching Rhythm
Birds are active year-round, and winter makes them easier to spot against bare trees.

  • Setting up simple feeders with homemade suet and seed.

  • Daily checks from windows or short outdoor walks.

  • Noting visitors like wild turkeys, deer (for tracks), and feeder regulars.

Tying Birds to Matthew 6:26
This verse is our focus: YAH feeds the birds without their worry—how much more does He care for us?

  • Simple Connection: While watching birds eat, we talk about YAH’s daily provision.

  • Discussion Points:

    • Birds don’t farm, yet YAH feeds them.

    • We can trust YAH for our needs too.

    • Kindness to birds shows gratitude.

How Bird Watching Becomes Lessons

  • Science: Identifying birds, observing behavior, flight patterns.

  • Math: Counting visitors or seeds used.

  • Life Skills: Filling feeders, patience waiting for birds.

  • Bible Integration: Gratitude for YAH’s care in creation.

Practical Bird Watching Tips

  • Hang feeders near windows for easy viewing.

  • Use homemade suet (from farm fat) or seed mixes.

  • Keep a simple journal—draw or note birds seen.

  • Stay quiet and still for best sightings.
