Homemade Bird Suet with Farm Seeds & Fat – Winter Bird Feeding the Natural Way

Intro
Happy February from Lange Girl Farms! As the winter days continue in Southeast Michigan, we’re keeping our wild bird visitors well-fed with homemade suet cakes made from farm-rendered fat and seeds. This simple, zero-waste project uses beef or duck fat from our kitchen (or lard), mixed with birdseed, dried herbs, and scraps—perfect for attracting chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the occasional wild turkey flock we spot on the land. Today, I’ll share our easy homestead suet recipe, variations with farm ingredients, hanging tips, and why it’s better than store-bought. For any dry hands from mixing, our Bumps & Bruises Salve is a quick natural fix!

Why Homemade Bird Suet?
Commercial suet cakes often have additives—we prefer the natural route.

  • Uses kitchen fat (beef tallow, duck fat) instead of waste.

  • Customizable with farm seeds and dried herbs.

  • Zero-waste and cost-effective.

  • Supports local wildlife through cold months.

We’ve been making these for years, and the birds love them!

Basic Homemade Bird Suet Recipe
 Makes about 6-8 cakes.

  • 1 cup rendered fat (beef tallow, duck fat, or lard—melt and strain).

  • 1 cup birdseed mix (black oil sunflower, millet from farm scraps).

  • 1/2 cup peanut butter (natural, no sugar).

  • Optional add-ins: dried mealworms, crushed eggshells (calcium from our ducks/chickens), dried berries or herbs.

Hanging & Feeding Tips

  • Use wire suet cages or pinecone strings.

  • Place near cover (trees or shrubs) for safety.

  • Keep away from windows to prevent strikes.

  • Refresh weekly—store extras in fridge.

Farm Notes

  • Our chickens and ducks provide eggshells for calcium.

  • Wild turkeys sometimes clean up dropped seeds!

  • Bumps & Bruises Salve soothes hands after mixing sticky fat.

Wrapping Up
Homemade bird suet is an easy winter project that feeds YAH’s creation and uses farm resources wisely. Hang a cake this week and watch the birds flock!

Stay inspired,
