Living on Lange Girl Farms in Tecumseh, Michigan, has given my family a front-row seat to the joys of farm life for over 15 years. From tending to our horses and chickens to watching the seasons change in our pastures, there’s always something magical happening on the farm. That’s why I created the Farm Animal Coloring Book, a collection of over 50 single-sided pages filled with cute illustrations of farm animals like cows, pigs, horses, and sheep, all set against a charming barnyard backdrop. Today, I’m sharing five farm-inspired activities you can pair with this coloring book to bring the barnyard to life for your kids—and make learning and playtime even more fun!
The Farm Animal Coloring Book is all about celebrating the animals that make farm life so special. Each page features a different animal, from a fluffy sheep to a playful pig, all gathered around a classic red barn. My kids love coloring these pages, and I’ve found that pairing the book with real-world activities helps deepen their connection to the farm theme. Whether you live on a farm like we do or just want to bring a bit of barnyard magic into your home, these activities are a great way to extend the fun of the coloring book and create lasting memories with your little ones.
Activity 1: Visit a Local Farm or Petting Zoo
One of the best ways to bring the coloring book to life is by seeing farm animals in person. Take your kids to a local farm or petting zoo where they can meet cows, pigs, and chickens like the ones in the book. Before you go, color a few pages together—like the cow or the horse—and talk about what those animals might be like in real life. When you’re at the farm, encourage your child to compare the real animals to their colored pictures. It’s a wonderful way to make the connection between the book and the real world, and it’ll spark their curiosity about farm life. If you’re in the Tecumseh area, let me know—I’d be happy to recommend some of our favorite local spots!
Activity 2: Create a Farm Animal Craft
After coloring a page from the book, turn your child’s artwork into a fun craft. For example, if they colored the sheep, help them cut out the picture and glue cotton balls onto the sheep’s wool to give it a fluffy texture. Or, if they colored the chicken, use feathers and googly eyes to make a 3D version. These crafts are a great way to extend the creative fun of the coloring book and give your child a sense of pride in their artwork. Plus, they’ll love displaying their creations around the house, bringing a bit of the barnyard indoors.
Activity 3: Plant a Mini Farm Garden
The Farm Animal Coloring Book features a barn surrounded by trees and grass, which inspired this next activity: planting a mini garden. You don’t need a big space—just a few pots or a small patch of dirt will do. Help your child plant easy-to-grow seeds like sunflowers (a nod to the farm theme) or herbs that animals might eat, like parsley for chickens. As you plant, talk about how farms grow food for both people and animals, tying it back to the book’s barnyard setting. Coloring the book’s pages while waiting for the plants to grow will keep the farm theme alive and teach your child about patience and nurturing.
Activity 4: Have a Barnyard Picnic
Turn lunchtime into a farm-inspired adventure by hosting a barnyard picnic. Spread a blanket in your backyard or living room, and pack a picnic with farm-fresh foods like apples, cheese, and bread—things you might find on a real farm. While you eat, read the names of the animals in the coloring book and make their sounds together (e.g., “Moo!” for the cow, “Oink!” for the pig). Then, let your child color a page while you enjoy the picnic. It’s a fun way to immerse them in the farm theme and make the coloring book part of a memorable family moment.
Activity 5: Draw Your Own Farm Animal Story
After coloring a few pages, encourage your child to create their own farm animal story. Ask them questions like, “What would the cow and the pig do if they went on an adventure together?” or “What does the horse like to do on the farm?” Provide paper and crayons for them to draw their story, using the characters from the coloring book as inspiration. This activity builds on the creativity sparked by the book and helps kids practice storytelling and imagination. You might even end up with a new family favorite tale to tell at bedtime!
The Farm Animal Coloring Book is more than just a coloring book—it’s a gateway to farm-inspired fun that brings families together. With its adorable illustrations and single-sided pages, it’s perfect for kids who love animals and coloring. As a farm mom, I designed this book to share the magic of the barnyard with kids everywhere, whether they live on a farm or just dream of visiting one.
