City Water Chronicles – Holistic Lessons from the Tap

October 29, 2025|Farm Life, Gardening, Holistic, Homesteading, Livestock, Sustainability

Howdy, y’all, urban-rural kin! It’s your cowgirl from Lange Girl Farms, yodel’n from our Tecumseh, Michigan homestead, where alpacas roam and wildcrafted teas steep. We’ve covered water’s essence and well water; now, let’s turn to city water – that treated tap flow many rely on. It’s a double-edged sword: processed for safety but pack’n contaminants that challenge our holistic liv’n. We’ll wrangle the impurities, RO systems, whole-home filters, softeners, pipes, skin effects, and pH across USA cities – all tied to our farm-fresh spirit!

City Water: Treated but Troubled

City water runs through treatment plants, aim’n to kill germs and balance minerals, makin’ it a reliable draw for many. But the process and old pipes add their own mess, hittin’ us via drinkin’ (oral ingestion) or showers (skin absorption/inhalation). Here’s the lineup of city water contaminants, their deeds, and harms:

  • Chlorine/Chloramine (disinfection byproducts): Added to zap microbes, leavin’ trihalomethanes. Ingestion: Gut irritation, bladder cancer links, thyroid issues. Skin/Inhalation: Dries skin, causes rashes; vapors irritate lungs/eyes.
  • Fluoride: Added for teeth, but excess builds. Ingestion: Dental/skeletal fluorosis (painful bones). Skin: Minimal harm, but chronic exposure might dry skin.
  • Lead: From old pipes or solder. Ingestion: Nervous system hits – delays in kids, hypertension in adults, kidney damage. Skin: Low absorption, but wounds add to burden.
  • PFAS (forever chemicals): From industrial runoff. Ingestion: Immunity drop, cholesterol rise, cancer risks. Skin: Seeps through, harm’n organs.
  • VOCs (benzene, TCE): From leaks or solvents. Ingestion: Liver/kidney damage, cancer risks. Skin/Inhalation: Absorbs in showers, causin’ headaches or irritation.
  • Pharmaceuticals (antibiotics, hormones): From wastewater. Ingestion: Hormone chaos, antibiotic resistance. Skin: Limited, but baths add exposure.
  • Microorganisms (Cryptosporidium): If treatment slips. Ingestion: Stomach cramps, diarrhea. Skin: Rare harm unless cuts.

We test yearly to keep our teas pure and bodies strong.

City pH varies: San Diego’s 8, Tampa Bay 7.9, Hamilton, ON 9-9.5, Johnson County, KS 9.5-9.8. Aim for 6.5-8.5 to avoid corrosion or scaling.

RO in the Kitchen: City Water Savior

RO systems like the Express Water RO System ($150-300) or iSpring RCC7AK zap contaminants. We use ‘em for teas, with easy install and filter swaps.

Whole-Home Filtration: Source Cleanin’

The HQUA WF3-01 ($200) or SpringWell CWH-3 ($800+) tackle chlorine and metals house-wide – pure for showers and laundry.

Soft’n Hard City Water

Hard city water needs the Aquasure or NuvoH2O ($400-1,000) for silky flow, savin’ soap.

Pipes and Skin: The Tap Trails

Copper leaches if acidic; PEX is corrosion-free. Chlorine dries skin; filtered water boosts our salves’ glow.
