Intro
Hi there, it’s Kara from Lange Girl Farms! May’s chick season, and after 15 years of raising flocks naturally, I’m hooked—those peeps melt me! From huskies guarding to ducks sharing space, my homestead’s taught me holistic chick care. If you’re new to this, here’s my simple, sustainable way to nurture babies—years of feathered friends behind it. Let’s raise some fluffballs!
Step 1: Set Up a Brooder
I use an old kids pack ‘n’ play but have also used a galvanized stock tank like feed stores use during chick days with pine shavings—my first chicks thrived there. Add a heat lamp, you can find it here thru my affiliate link (https://amzn.to/4jD7RA7)at 95°F; my minis’ barn corner works great or my mudroom (old converted garage space).
Step 2: Feed Right
Chick starter—no junk, just natural crumbs. I sprinkle grit; 15 years showed me they need it to digest. Water in a brooder should be hung if possible so that it stays clean.
Step 3: Keep ‘Em Warm
95°F first week, drop 5°F weekly—my husky pup once snuggled too close, so I monitor! Heat’s key; years of cold losses taught me.
Step 4: Watch Health
Bright eyes, active peeps—good signs. Pasturella hit once; now I use herbs like oregano in water—holistic and effective.
Step 5: Move Outdoors
Six weeks, feathered out—into the coop they go! My ducks greet ‘em; 15 years of transitions made it smooth. Fence ‘em from horses ‘til they’re big.
Conclusion
Raising chicks naturally is my spring joy—15 years of peeps perfected this. Start yours this May; they’re worth it! Pin this for chick success, and stay with Lange Girl Farms for more flock tips.
