Water from Above – Once Pure, Now Poisoned and Poisoning Our Soil

October 30, 2025|Farm Life, Gardening, Holistic, Homesteading, Livestock, Sustainability

Howdy, y’all, earth guardians and homestead kin! It’s your cowgirl from Lange Girl Farms, callin’ out from our Tecumseh, Michigan haven, where alpacas graze and wildcrafted teas brew. We’ve roped in well and city water tales; now, let’s turn our eyes skyward to the water that falls from above – rain. Once a gift from the heavens, it’s now carry’n a heavy load of pollutants, poison’n our soils and seep’n into our holistic life. At Lange Girl Farms, we see this as a call to action, protect’n our non-GMO gardens and critters with nature’s wisdom. Let’s dive into how this once-pristine rain has turned, the contaminants it drags down, and how they harm our land and us!

Rainwater: A Fallen Treasure

Rain used to be a symbol of renewal, fall’n to nourish our wildcrafted roots. But them days are gone – today’s rain ain’t pure no more. It scoops up the world’s mess as it tumbles from the clouds, carry’n pollutants from factories, farms, and highways into our soils and water barrels. This ain’t about shadowy “chemtrails” (those jet contrails are just ice from exhaust, per NASA, yet we all know the truth), but real pollution we’ve let loose. Studies show rain’s laced with chemicals, even in remote Antarctica, turn’n our fields into catch basins. It’s a heartbreak for our farm-fresh ethos, but we can fight back.

Here’s the posse of contaminants rain drags down, their sources, what they do to our soils, and how they harm us via ingestion (drinkin’ unfiltered rain) or skin contact (gardening, showers):

  • PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances): From waterproof gear, non-stick cookware, and firefight’n foam. Soil Impact: Persists for decades, build’n up in crops and groundwater, stunt’n plant growth. Ingestion: Disrupts hormones, weakens immunity, links to cancers (kidney, testicular) and high cholesterol. Skin: Seeps through pores, accumulatin’ in organs.
  • Heavy Metals (Lead, Mercury): From vehicle exhaust, coal plants, or roof runoff. Soil Impact: Acidic rain leaches these into soil, toxify’n roots. Ingestion: Brain/kidney damage, nerve issues. Skin: Adds to load, irritatin’ skin.
  • Nitrates/Nitrites: From fertilizers, sewage, and NOx emissions. Soil Impact: Over-fertilizes, causin’ algal blooms or depletion. Ingestion: Blue baby syndrome, cancer risks. Skin: Dries or irritates.
  • Acids (Sulfuric/Nitric from SOx/NOx): From power plants and cars. Soil Impact: Strips nutrients, harms microbes. Ingestion: Corrodes gut, leaches metals. Skin/Inhalation: Irritates lungs/eyes, triggers eczema.
  • Microplastics & Particulates: From tire wear, construction. Soil Impact: Clogs pores, reduc’n retention. Ingestion: Gut inflammation, toxin carriers. Skin: Clogs pores, worsens skincare.
  • VOCs/Pesticides: From paints, fuels, ag sprays. Soil Impact: Disrupts fungi, harms plants.  Ingestion: Liver/kidney strain, hormone chaos. Skin/Inhalation: Headaches, irritation.

The Soil Toll and Our Holistic Fight

This poisoned rain seeps into soils, dropp’n pH below 6 in acidic zones like the Northeast. 16 It weakens our harvests and teas’ potency. We test rain (kits ~$20), use Express Water RO System for gardens, and SpringWell CWH-3 for indoor use. Soil amendments like lime help.

Reclaim’n the Sky’s Gift

Treat rain like well water with APEC ROES-PHUV75. Test pH (6.5-8.5) and heavies. It’s our shield for crops and skin.
