Hey ladies, it’s Kara from Lange Girl Farms! Fifteen years of country life—huskies, horses, llamas, and all—have made me a homesteader, but I wasn’t born knowing this stuff. My early days were full of “oops” moments, and I’m sharing what I wish I’d known back then. Whether you’re new or seasoned, these lessons from my natural, holistic path will save you some grief!
Lesson 1: Animals Teach You Most
My huskies showed me problem solving; llamas taught me fencing. Listen to your crew—they’re the real experts.
Lesson 2: Soil’s Everything
I ignored soil health—plants flopped ‘til I composted and tested with a soil tester (https://amzn.to/44GpU3j). Feed the earth first. Take care of the land and it will care and feed your family in the future.
Lesson 3: Holistic Beats Quick Fixes
I tried shortcuts—chemicals once—but herbs and time heal better. My horses thrive on natural care now. I will never use chemicals on my land and that goes for even weeding the garden. I use permaculture and cover crop methods to limit weeds while helping to regenerate the soil.
Lesson 4: Flops Build Skills
A drowned garden and a loose duck taught me drainage and latches. Every mistake is a win down the road and sometimes you need to learn by doing. Start small and build the skills and knowledge.
Fifteen years distilled into these truths—my homestead’s stronger for it. Pin this for homestead wisdom, and join me at Lange Girl Farms for more from the land!
