Happy February from Lange Girl Farms! As the days slowly lengthen in Southeast Michigan, we’re gearing up for one of our favorite late-winter rituals: maple tapping prep. With sugar maples on the land, we tap them each year for that pure, rich syrup straight from YAH’s provision. It’s a low-effort, high-reward project that teaches patience and perfect timing. Today, I’ll share our maple tapping prep checklist, essential tools, timing tips for our zone, and the simple sap-to-syrup process. For cold hands from drilling or collecting, our Headache Salve brings quick natural relief!

Why Tap Sugar Maples on the Homestead?
Tapping our own sugar maples is a sweet tradition.
- Uses trees right on the property—no big investment.
- Teaches weather observation and patience.
- Produces pure, farm-fresh syrup for pancakes, baking, or gifts.
- Connects to YAH’s seasonal provision.
We’ve been tapping our sugar maples for years—classic flavor we love.
Timing for Tapping in Southeast Michigan
- Ideal window: Late February to early March (days above freezing, nights below).
- Watch for sap flow when temps swing 32-45°F.
