Data Centers, Wireless Radiation, and Protecting Our Pollinators, Livestock, and Land

June is here and the garden is buzzing. I’ve been out early with the horses, missing our big, gentle guardian Lakota, and watching the bees move between the clover and wildflowers along the fence lines and hedgerows we’ve planted. Those pollinators, the pasture, and the clean meat we raise are the heart of what we do here. But the more I dig into the bigger system around us — data centers swallowing land on shore, under the ocean, and now planned in space, new gas plants to feed them, constant wireless radiation, and the strong push to tie everything to the grid — the more it feels like a coordinated shift away from the independent, regenerative life so many of us are trying to build.
This isn’t about rejecting all modern tools. It’s about seeing the full picture, including how artificial light (especially blue-heavy LEDs) and non-native EMF (nnEMF) work together to disrupt our biology at the deepest level — the mitochondria. Dr. Jack Kruse’s deep dives on light biology have been eye-opening. Natural sunlight, especially morning UV and red/infrared light, is essential for proper mitochondrial function, hormone regulation, and overall health. Modern LED lighting and constant wireless signals create a mismatch that damages the same cellular machinery across species. No wonder incandescent bulbs feel so much better — they align more closely with natural light spectra, while the “green energy” push for LEDs often comes with hidden biological costs.
The Push for Grid Centralization: Everything Tied Together
There’s a clear pattern pushing more and more of daily life toward centralized utilities, smart infrastructure, and constant connectivity. Smart homes, smart appliances, EVs, data centers, and “electrify everything” initiatives are sold as efficient and green. In reality, they increase dependence on utilities, expand transmission lines, pipelines, and wireless networks through rural lands, and raise overall RF-EMF density.
Propane and wood are being phased down through rebates, air quality rules, and building codes in favor of pipeline natural gas or grid-tied electric. Wood (a renewable, local biomass resource) and propane (portable and off-grid friendly) are sidelined for monitored, utility-controlled systems. This ties homes, farms, and communities more tightly to the grid — exactly what supports massive data center demand and reduces true independence.
Data Centers on Land, Ocean, and Now Planned in Space
Data centers for AI and cloud computing are expanding at an unprecedented rate. They need enormous electricity, water, and solutions for heat.
• Terrestrial: Many proposals target rural areas and public lands (including BLM grazing allotments). Projections show data centers could consume 9–12%+ of U.S. electricity by 2030.
• Japan’s Ocean / Subsea Centers: Japan is advancing underwater facilities using cold seawater for passive cooling. This reduces energy and water use dramatically but raises concerns about localized thermal pollution, marine EMF from cables, and impacts on sensitive sea life. While small pilots show limited harm (and sometimes artificial reef benefits), large-scale rollout needs careful monitoring.
• Elon Musk / SpaceX Orbital Plans: Space-based AI data centers using solar power and radiative cooling in vacuum. This avoids some terrestrial land use but still requires massive ground infrastructure, launches, and supporting connectivity on Earth.
All these “innovative” solutions address symptoms (cooling, land scarcity) while enabling unchecked AI growth and more smart/grid dependence back on the ground.
Green Claims vs. Reality – The Hypocrisy
Big tech markets “carbon neutral” goals and renewable PPAs while driving enormous fossil fuel demand for reliability. The same players pushing EVs, smart homes, and “be green” for consumers are among the largest new electricity users — often relying on natural gas peaker plants. In Michigan, the proposed Lima Center gas plant near Chelsea/Ann Arbor has maps showing 5-, 10-, and 15-mile downwind PM2.5 impact zones affecting farms and communities.
The LED push (sold as energy-saving) replaces more natural-spectrum lighting while increasing blue light and smart connectivity that Kruse links to mitochondrial damage. The overall effect is more centralization, not true regeneration.
Michigan Reality: Saline and the Hot Mic
In Saline Township, the board voted 4-1 against rezoning farmland for a $16 billion Oracle/OpenAI data center. The developer sued; the township settled due to costs. Governor Whitmer attended the groundbreaking, where a hot mic reportedly captured her telling the CEO, “We’re used to people saying f*ck no, and doing it anyway.” Many locals saw this as fast-tracking despite strong opposition. Microsoft’s NDA reversal was a partial transparency win, but the pattern continues.
WiFi / nnEMF, Light Biology, and Living Systems
The wireless infrastructure that powers this grid-tied world, combined with artificial light, disrupts biology across species through shared mechanisms: oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, navigation disruption, gene expression changes, and blood changes (e.g., rouleaux formation).
Bees & Pollinators
The 2023 Science Advances study documented strong effects at 10–25 meters from active power lines (3x less flower visitation) and still measurable impacts at 210–235 meters.
Plants & Forage
RF-EMF alters growth, germination, and nutritional quality (e.g., vitamin reductions in crops). Artificial light adds further stress.
Livestock & Cross-Species Plausibility
Direct studies are limited and often older, but cascading effects (EMF-stressed forage + direct exposure) are highly plausible given consistent mechanisms in bees, plants, humans, and blood research. Kruse’s work on mitochondria makes this even more concerning for animals on pasture.
Human Health & Light Biology
Neurological symptoms (headaches, sleep disruption) are common. Kruse emphasizes that blue light at night plus nnEMF damages mitochondria and disrupts circadian rhythms, leptin, dopamine, and hormones. Morning natural sunlight is protective.
On our homestead, tree windbreaks and woods provide real buffering. We minimize unnecessary smart tech to stay more off-grid and protect our data, health, and independence.
Why Policies Lag: Money, Military Ties, and Agendas
FCC/ICNIRP standards remain outdated and thermal-only. Regulatory capture, revolving doors, and military-industrial influence slow updates. Economic competitiveness and data economy priorities win out over precaution. The “green” push often masks expanded fossil/gas infrastructure and centralized control that reduces rural independence.
This centralization and the biological pressures it creates make true regenerative homesteading even more important.
