Well Water Wisdom – Holistic Insights from the Homestead

Howdy, y’all, farm friends! Back at Lange Girl Farms, where our Michigan homestead buzzes with the munch’n of alpacas and the gallop of horses. Last time, we roped in a water overview; now, let’s corral our focus on well water – that underground gold many of us tap for off-grid liv’n. It’s raw and rugged, but it can pack some wild challenges. We’ll round up contaminants, RO kitchen setups, whole-home filters, softeners, pipes, and skin absorption, all woven into our Lange Girl Farms holistic way. Think: Us’n pure well water for our salves and teas to boost their heal’n power without synthetic shadows. Plus, pH insights from wells across the USA!

Well Water: A Natural Treasure with Twists

Well water pulls straight from aquifers, sidestepp’n city treatments – pure potential for sustainable liv’n! But without a guide, it can carry more natural stowaways. Usual suspects sneak in from soil, runoff, or geology, hittin’ us via drinkin’ (oral ingestion) or bathin’ (skin absorption/inhalation). Here’s the lowdown on well water contaminants, what they do, and their harms:

  • Bacteria (like E. coli or coliform): From animal waste or septic leaks. Ingestion: Causes gut woes like diarrhea, cramps, or severe infections (especially in kids or elders). Skin: Low risk unless through cuts, leadin’ to infections.

  • Nitrates/Nitrites: From fertilizers or manure runoff. Ingestion: Blue baby syndrome in infants (starves oxygen in blood), potential cancer links long-term. Skin: Minimal absorption, but can dry/irritate if bathing in high-nitrate water.

  • Arsenic: Natural from rocks or mining residues. Ingestion: Raises risks of diabetes, heart disease, and cancers (bladder, lung, skin). Skin: Absorbs somewhat, causin’ lesions or hyperpigmentation over time.

  • Radon: Radioactive gas from soil. Ingestion: Stomach cancer risks. Skin/Inhalation: Main harm from shower vapors, linkin’ to lung cancer.

  • Heavy Metals (like lead, mercury, or iron): From natural deposits or old pipes. Ingestion: Lead hits brain development; mercury damages kidneys/nerves; iron causes stomach upset. Skin: Limited for most, but mercury can absorb and cause rashes or systemic issues.

  • Pesticides/Herbicides (VOCs/SOCs): Agricultural runoff. Ingestion: Neurological damage, hormone disruption, cancer risks. Skin/Inhalation: Absorbs in showers, leadin’ to skin irritation or liver/kidney strain.

  • PFAS: If near landfills or farms. Ingestion: Immune suppression, developmental issues. Skin: Penetrates skin, accumulatin’ and harm’n organs.

Holistically, we test yearly (kits are a steal!) to respect this resource, ensur’n it fuels our wildcrafted life.

Speakin’ of balance, well pH can swing wider than city taps, often dippin’ lower in rocky or glaciated spots. Aim for that EPA sweet spot of 6.5-8.5. Northeast wells (like our Michigan trails) hover 6.5-7.5, sometimes lower in acidic soils. Rhode Island wells range 5.1-8.2; Midwest (ours) sits 7-8; Western arid zones push 7.5-8.5. Low pH corrodes pipes; high brings scale – test and tweak!

RO in the Kitchen: Tailored for Well Trials

A kitchen RO system’s a must for well folks, wranglin’ microbes and metals. We use theAPEC ROES-PHUV75 ($200-400) with UV for bacteria, plus iron pre-filters. Easy install, keeps farm tools scale-free.

Whole-Home Filtration: Guard’n Your Source

Whole-home systems with sediment and carbon/KDF filters tackle iron and metals. Add Aquasana  for bacteria. TryHome Master  ($300+) or SpringWell CWH-3 ($800+) – pure water for huskies and seeds.

Soft’n Hard Well Water

Hard wells need soften’ers. The Fleck 5600SXT (salt-based) or NuvoH2O  (salt-free) make water silky, savin’ soap. Costs $500-1,200; test hardness.

Pipes and Skin: The Hidden Trails

Copper’s tough but leaches in acidic wells; PEX is our fave for no corrosion. 20 22 Arsenic seeps via pores; radon harms via vapor. Filtered showers boost our salves’ glow.
