Happy New Year from Lange Girl Farms! As we navigate the quieter winter days in Southeast Michigan, one of our favorite ways to keep fresh greens on the table is growing sunflower microgreens indoors. These nutty, crunchy shoots are packed with nutrition, easy for beginners, and ready in just 7-10 days—perfect for adding farm-fresh flavor to salads, sandwiches, or eggs from our chickens and ducks. Today’s Plant of the Week is a full guide to growing sunflower microgreens year-round, with tips tailored to homestead life. For any hand care from soil handling, our Custom Slate Microgreen Marker keeps things organized, and Bumps & Bruises Salve soothes dry skin.
Why Sunflower Microgreens?
Sunflower microgreens (Helianthus annuus shoots) are a homestead superfood—high in protein, vitamins E and B, and antioxidants. They’re:
- Fast-growing (harvest in 7-10 days).
- Space-efficient (grow on a windowsill or shelf).
- Nutritious and delicious—mild, nutty taste.
- Cost-effective—seeds are inexpensive, and one tray feeds a family.
We love them for winter when outdoor greens are limited.
