Happy New Year from Lange Girl Farms! As we enjoy the winter landscape in Southeast Michigan, one evergreen that’s earning its keep is Thuja occidentalis, commonly known as arborvitae (or eastern white cedar). This native conifer provides year-round privacy, windbreaks, and beauty on the farm—especially valuable when leaves are down. We have several arborvitae hedges screening the pastures and barn area, and they’re a homestead favorite for both function and form. Today’s Plant of the Week is a full guide to arborvitae care, winter benefits, homestead uses, and pruning tips. For any hand care from winter pruning, our Muscle & Joint Salve is a must!
Identification & Characteristics
Thuja occidentalis is a classic evergreen for northern climates.
- Size: 20-40 feet tall, 10-15 feet wide (dwarf varieties 3-10 feet).
- Foliage: Soft, scale-like leaves in flat sprays, bright green to golden (depending on variety).
- Form: Pyramidal or columnar—great for hedges or specimens.
- Cones: Small, oblong, light brown.
- Native Range: Eastern North America—thrives in our zone.
Why We Love It on the Homestead
Arborvitae checks all the boxes for farm life:
- Winter Privacy: Dense foliage screens barn views and wind for animals.
- Windbreak: Protects pastures and coops from cold gusts.
- Wildlife Habitat: Shelter for birds; deer browse lightly (we see tracks!).
- Low Maintenance: Once established, very forgiving.

Growing & Care Guide
- Site: Full sun to part shade; moist, well-drained soil (tolerates wetter areas).
- Planting: Spring or fall. Space 4-6 feet for hedges.
- Water: Regular first 2 years; drought-tolerant after.
- Fertilizer: Slow-release evergreen formula in spring.
- Pruning: Late winter/early spring—shape lightly, avoid cutting into old wood.
- Pests/Diseases: Generally resistant; watch for bagworms or deer browsing.
