The big horses were out grazing this morning with their steady, grounded energy, while the alpacas moved along the fenceline checking everything out in their thoughtful way. I took time to hand-weed a few stubborn spots near the herbs and torch some young weeds before they could spread. The Siberian huskies had their own space to run, the llamas kept their quiet lookout, and the chickens and ducks were happily occupied in their secure run. These simple mornings without chemicals feel right — the land stays alive, the animals stay strong, and we have real peace of mind.

Humans: Developmental Toxicity & Reproductive Concerns

Novaluron disrupts chitin synthesis in insects, but it can also affect developing organisms in mammals. Key concerns include:

•  Developmental effects: Animal studies show impacts on fetal development, including skeletal abnormalities and reduced growth when exposure occurs during pregnancy.

•  Reproductive toxicity: Potential for reduced fertility and developmental delays in offspring.

•  Chronic low-level exposure: Residues in strawberries, berries, and other produce contribute to cumulative exposure, especially concerning for children and pregnant women.

•  Cancer and endocrine links: It is among the pesticides associated with higher childhood cancer risk in areas with heavy agricultural spraying.

In regions like Watsonville, California, heavy pesticide use (including insect growth regulators like novaluron) has been linked to elevated childhood cancer rates near the fields.

Livestock: Risks to Pregnant Animals & Developmental Issues

Our pregnant mini mare gets only clean pasture for a reason. Studies in animals exposed to novaluron and similar IGRs show:

•  Reproductive toxicity: disrupted hormone balance, reduced fertility, and higher rates of embryonic loss or developmental abnormalities.

•  Developmental effects: impacts on offspring growth and skeletal formation when exposure occurs during gestation.

•  Transfer through feed: When livestock eat contaminated hay, grain, or forage from treated fields, residues can appear in milk, meat, and eggs.

Horses and other sensitive species appear particularly vulnerable during gestation. That’s why we’re so protective of our expectant mare and the rest of the herd — their forage and environment stay completely free of these insecticides. Our chickens and ducks also benefit from the clean system, producing strong eggs without the stress seen in conventionally raised birds.

Wildlife & Aquatic Life: Non-Target Toxicity & Runoff Effects

Novaluron is toxic to many non-target organisms:

•  Beneficial insects: It disrupts molting in immature stages of beneficial insects and pollinators, adding to the damage we saw with neonics.

•  Aquatic life: Highly toxic to crustaceans and other aquatic invertebrates. Runoff from strawberry fields and other treated crops carries it into streams and ponds, disrupting aquatic ecosystems.

In heavy strawberry-growing regions, repeated applications increase the risk of drift and runoff, affecting wild areas, hedgerows, and waterways far beyond the farm boundary.

The Bigger Picture: Why This Toll Hits Regenerative Farms Hardest
